Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) established the Diversity and Inclusion Council in 2018. We are committed to supporting and celebrating the unique cultural identity and practice of each staff member, faculty, and student. Throughout the COVID 19 pandemic, people have faced intense challenges relating to healthcare issues, race, identity, and poverty. As a result, people needed a safe space to express their truths about the inequalities in our American system. Beginning in the fall of 2020, we launched a Diversity Films Discussion Series. Faculty and Staff are invited to view three specific films and join in a virtual discussion on each. These films cover a variety of topics such as race and gender inequality, LGBTQ rights, and the disability rights movement. Human Resources allowed and encouraged staff and faculty to watch these films on work time. Each film had a follow-up designated Teams discussion on specific Fridays. This approach was then adapted as a student-driven initiative to connect to specific curriculum within their sociology coursework. This presentation will discuss the mechanics of our programming, share feedback from participants, and examine new strategies for future film events.
